Things like cleaning the gutters, opening the floor vents, disconnecting the hose, and various other tasks throughout the year become second nature, but there are a number of things you may not have considered that could be dangers around your home just waiting to pop up.

So here are some good tips to keep your home as safe as possible year round!

Turn off the water
When you leave town, even if it’s just for a couple days it’s a good idea to turn off your main water. You can’t ever tell what might happen while you are away; one of the most destructive forces you can unleash in your home is water. Don’t risk having your vacation, and your next several months, ruined due to a water pipe bursting when no one was home.

Don’t Leave Your Remote In The Car
No, not the TV remote! The garage door remote. Leaving your garage door fob in the car may be convenient but fact is anyone who smashes your car window will then have instant access to your whole house!

Clean That Vent
Dryer fires can be devastating, and worst of all they are completely avoidable. Your faithful clothes dryer works hard drying your clothes, but even if you clean the lint trap the vent to the outside can still fill with lint and dust. This can be a major fire hazard – especially if you have an older dryer that doesn’t have a temperature safety cutoff.

Have A Plan
Talk to your family and have a plan for what to do when things go sideways. That might mean just having an agreed upon safe place to meet – like a trusted family member or neighbors house – or having a ready made preparedness kit for emergencies. By talking ahead of time about different scenarios you can be prepared and also take a lot of the fear out of the unknown.

Nobody likes to think about what could go wrong, what might happen, but you need to in order to be aware and ready should something actually happen. This doesn’t mean living in fear, but rather being aware so that you can be as prepared and safe as possible.

Never Throw These Things Down The Drain!

Your sink is not a garbage shoot. A lot of people are stunned to discover this! Even if you have a garbage disposal in your sink it’s still not the best place just to dump whatever you have and forget about it – because if you do you may be setting yourself up for real trouble down the road! It’s not complicated to avoid however, in fact there’s really just three things you have to worry about never throwing down the drain and here they are:

Potato Peels
Seems innocuous enough…SEEMS. Fact is these beloved tubers can cause real problems for your plumbing! Most people think that if the disposal will chew it up it’s okay to put it through, but that’s just not the case. While for the most part potato peels can go down the disposal since they are very fibrous and tough they often end up in big chunks that clog the pip further down the line. Your best bet is to put these, and other vegetable matter, in the compost bin for the garden.

Grease!
No, not the beloved musical. The stuff that makes the food taste good! Unfortunately it can cause big trouble for your drain. Most people mistakenly think that as long as it’s warm and liquid it’s fine to pour away, but the truth is that grease cools down the pipe and solidifies into a nasty mess! No amount of hand jiving will solve that! Best course of action is not to pour it down the pipe in the first place.

Money!
Yep. We went there. Don’t just throw money down the drain! It’s easy to do without even thinking about it. One of the ways we see people do this most often is when they buy new appliances rather than repair the ones they have. While sometimes it is a smart idea to upgrade to a more efficient or feature rich machine, most times your current appliances will have lots of life left in them. The good news?
